Joep Beving presents "Liminal" on piano at Teatro Cervantes on Saturday 12 June 2027 at 20:00, as part of the Terral 2027 series.
"Liminal" (Deutsche Grammophon, 2026) is a search for renewal. Across fifteen pieces, the pianist reflects on a relationship with the world in which we listen to nature, move with it, and let it express itself through art: composing becomes a way of tuning in to the wider forces of life. With pieces such as "Elysium", "When Humans Do Algorithms" and "Wild Renaissance", the album is a dance that sways between intention and intuition.
The Dutch composer and pianist is one of the leading figures in neoclassical piano and contemporary minimalism; he describes his own work as "simple music for complex emotions", and his slow, intimate, atmospheric melodies have drawn comparisons to Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richter, Yann Tiersen, Erik Satie and Claude Debussy. His career arrived late and unexpectedly: after a work-related burnout in 2014 he returned to the piano as therapy and recorded his self-released debut, "Solipsism" (2015), in his kitchen. When Spotify featured "Sleeping Lotus" on its popular playlists, it racked up millions of streams overnight and he signed to Deutsche Grammophon. "Prehension" (2017) climbed to the top of the Billboard Classical chart, and "Henosis" won the 2019 Edison Award for classical/neoclassical music.
